THERE HAVE BEEN a lot of phones claiming to be 'Linux phones' and those that do run a Linux kernel, but they all miss the point of Linux: to be open. FIC is about to change that in a big way with a truly open phone, the OpenMoko.

Hi there...Open Source Mobile phones sound great, and many a team has tried their hand at developing them...Most of these teams have traditionally broken up. SO its great that Open Moko have come so far...Further they have tied up with some great partners for content, most of them open source too, so it will be interesting to see if they cause the mushrooming of similar ventures...
Unfortunately, Linux phones are marred by performance issues and the problem of having to build most of the drivers and modules from scratch. Which is why most Linux phones usually take much longer to develop. Hopefully, in the time to come, these issues will get resolved and one shall have a larger repository of Linux customized drivers for the various mobile peripherals.
On the topic, check out Qtopia Greenphone...Its a fantastic Linux phone, a little expensive but fully reprogrammable...
