I spent the day of 21st May in a very good company. There couldn't have been a better choice than Anal Jain and Prat Moghe to guide the budding entrepreneurs in our happening country. They have tonnes of experience and a great passion to share it with their younger siblings. The sessions they took were to-the-point and full of ready-to-use advice and tips. Vishal, Samir, Hemir and Niraj added on with their personal stories and the VC perspectives respectively.

Are you up to speed on Daylight Saving rule changes?

acism's picture

Hi all,

Are you aware that USA and Western Australia are changing their daylight saving rules? These are about the dates when the daylight savings are applicable in an year. For the US, the changes are coming into effect in 2007 and for Australia, they are already in effect from Dec 2006.

If you are developing software for clients in these countries, then please make sure that your software embodies the changed rules. If you are doing anything else, still you will need to be aware of these changes.

Java or Ruby?

I am a Java proponent and have been following Ruby for some time. I agree that Ruby on Rails is a great platform, and that Ruby is a great language. However, I have a few reservations because of which I have not converted over:

  1. Ruby's dynamic typing as against Java's static typing. While static typing brings some amount of rigidity, it also makes the application debugging very simple. I would give more marks to maintainability and longer program life than the rigidity that the developers have to deal with.

Takeaway from the PCQuest Sun Summit

acism's picture

Acism's Java team attended the PCQuest Sun summit last week. I have a few impressions at fifty thousand feet level to share:

  1. Sun is becoming even more open. Matt Thompson, Sr Director who looks after Sun's open source program gave a very balanced view. Sun is also releasing its JVM source code under open source licence.
  2. Childish Microsoft-bashing was absent. Highly mature views were presented about Sun's strategy of living in the world as it is. This will take Java a long way.
