What's Inside the iPad's Chip?

Despite widespread speculation, nothing beyond what Steve Jobs announced last week is known about the A4 chip at the heart of the Apple iPad.

Jobs described the chip with typical restraint during the unveiling of the iPad. "It's powered by our own silicon--the one gigahertz Apple A4 chip--it screams," he said, adding that the A4 chip includes an integrated CPU and graphics core on a single system on a chip (SoC).

Putting the Web in a Spreadsheet

Vast quantities of data are freely available on the Web, and it can be a potential treasure trove for many businesses--providing they can figure out how to use it effectively.

A company can, for example, comb through data from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and court records prior to acquiring another company to see if any of its intellectual property is tied up in legal action. In practice, however, going through so much information takes time and effort to orchestrate.

Touch Screens that Touch Back

Forget putting your phone on vibrate. A novel "high-definition" touch-feedback display can give a touch screen the feel of a textured surface. The technology was developed for mobile devices by the San Jose CA-based company Immersion, and is a step toward mimicking the feel of physical buttons on flat screens.

Google takes aim at Digg and Fark with Reader Play...

Google is adding a splash of fun to RSS feeds with a new service called Reader Play.

The service pulls in the most popular pictures and videos from across the web, and presents them in a full-screen slideshow. Users can vote for their favourite items, with Reader Play promising to personalise the feed based on your preferences.
