Dell to Go the Retail Way!

PC giant Dell, known to rely on direct online sales since 1990, is reportedly now looking at going the retail way...

It started, possibly, with Dell PCs going on sale in Wal-Mart stores in the US and Puerto Rico. And now the company is planning on putting its PCs on retail in Asia (India, China, and Japan), and Australia.
There is a feeling within industry that this paradigm shift in thinking might have been influenced by Michael Dell's return to the company early this year. Also that in trying to gain back some of the ground lost to Hewlett Packard (HP) globally, retail sales might be a huge bet.

Dell to use Ubuntu on Linux PCs

Computer maker Dell has chosen Ubuntu as the operating system for its range of Linux computers for consumers.

Fans of Linux hope that the move will persuade more mainstream PC users to abandon Microsoft Windows and opt for the open-source operating system.

London-based firm Canonical, the lead sponsor of the Ubuntu project, will ensure the software works on Dell PCs.

Ubuntu includes software like office programs, e-mail, a browser, instant messaging software and a media player.

Dell Computers to Come with Linux

After all the speculation, Dell has announced it will start selling computers with pre-installed Linux distributions instead of Microsoft Windows.

Reportedly, the idea is born out of IdeaStorm, Dell's all new Web site that was launched on Feb 16, and has since experienced a flood of requests, with users asking for Dell NBs and desktops loaded with pre-installed Linux distributions plus the open source alternative to Microsoft Office - OpenOffice.org.

Let's guess who gains the popularity.

The new team of leaders at Dell Inc. is weighing whether to allow customers to opt for PCs with the Linux operating system instead of the default Windows after thousands of users voted for the idea on a company blog.

The idea appeared Friday on a company-hosted blog called Dell Idea Storm. CEO Michael Dell unveiled the blog Feb. 16 as part of his effort to reinvigorate the struggling company. Dell said he hoped to use the blog to collect users' feedback and improve customer service.

Dell will start manufacturing all its products including desktops and laptops in India by the second half of 2007, the company said

Speaking at the inauguration of its fourth customer contact center in India at Gurgaon (Haryana) today, Dick Hunter, vice-president, customer experience and customer support at Dell, said the products would be manufactured at Sriperumbudur near Chennai.
