PXE stands for Pre - Execution Environment.
It is helpful to start or boot a computer
from a network. In suse linux we can setup an existing suse linux system as the
pxe server and we can install suse on other systems through lan.
Requirements:
1. An existing system running suse. (server name: suse).
2. Network.
3. Dump of suse cd/dvd's.(eg: /suse) i.e copy the contents of dvd to a folder /suse
ARM and six companies have announced a collaboration to develop Linux-based open source platform for next-generation mobile applications.
This initiative will address the rising consumer demand for access to the Internet and advanced applications on larger display mobile devices, ARM said in a release on Wednesday.
The collaboration was announced at the fourth annual ARM Developers’ Conference, being held this week in Santa Clara, California.
This collaboration focuses on the development of an open source platform based on Linux, Gnome Mobile and Mozilla Firefox that runs on ARM Partners’ advanced systems on chip (SoCs). It also strengthens ARM’s OS and browser ecosystem, while
leveraging the ability of ARM Partners to quickly bring products and technologies with graphics, video, multimedia and internet capabilities to consumers, an ARM statement added.
“Today’s consumers are very knowledgeable about technology, want to be connected to the Internet and access multimedia content and applications anywhere, at anytime, yet they do not want to be restricted by short battery life and inadequate features that will limit their experiences,” said Mike Inglis, executive vice president, Sales and Marketing, ARM. “By stepping up the collaboration among key stakeholders in the mobile market, we will be able to jointly deliver the devices and applications with the innovation consumers have come to expect.”
The new platform will be released into the open source community and will be adopted by ARM’s large ecosystem of software and silicon vendors, including Marvell, MontaVista, Movial, Mozilla, Samsung, and Texas Instruments.
ARM and its partners plan to release a full platform in early 2008 and bring devices to the market in early 2009.
Gnome, the desktop environment used by several Linux and open source platforms, has got an upgrade.
Gnome community has released version 2.20 of the open source desktop environment after six months of development.
Improvements in Gnome 2.20 include: Support for right-to-left languages; desktop search integrated into the file chooser dialog; new features in the Evolution email and calendar client; browsing of image collections; simplified system preferences; and improved power management.
Microsoft Corp. has replaced its controversial anti-Linux "Get the Facts" Web site with a kinder, gentler site explaining how its Windows Server operating system compares to open-source Linux as well as other competitive OSes.
The new WindowsServer/Compare Web site provides information about how Windows Server stacks up in total cost of ownership, reliability, security, manageability and interoperability with Linux, Unix and IBM Corp.'s mainframe architecture.
Google Inc. plans to launch a Linux version of Google Desktop on Wednesday, almost three years after the product's launch for the Windows operating system.
The application, designed for indexing and finding data in PCs, as well as for searching the Web, also comes in a Mac OS X version, introduced in April of this year.
Like the Mac OS X version, Google Desktop for Linux is a beta, or test, product. The Windows version shed its beta tag already, meaning Google considers it a more stable and mature product.
Even as Kumar reports of a successful Kick-off of Linux Asia 2007, sheer pandemonium has broken loose in the LUGD (Linux User Group, Delhi).
Why , you ask, is there noise for a Linux event by a Linux User group ? If you followed the above Linux Asia 2007 link, you probably wouldn't have asked this question.
Ever wonder why Linux company Red Hat is called that?
In an interview with Red Hat Magazine, co-founder Bob Young said that the red hat has long been a symbol of freedom, with revolutionaries in both America and France donning red caps during their uprisings.
"There is a tradition in western history of red being the symbol of liberation and challenge of authority," he says in the taped interview.
As for the name Red Hat specifically, fellow co-founder Marc Ewing also had an affinity for red hats and wore his grandfather's red lacrosse hat during his time at Carnegie Mellon.
"When Marc was at university he used to name his software projects red hat -- red hat one, red hat two -- just to differentiate them from his friends. So, of course, when he started his Linux project he just named it Red Hat Linux for lack of a better term," said Young, who left Red Hat in 2005 to focus his energies on another company he founded, online independent publishing marketplace Lulu.com.
In addition, Ewing became the go-to guy on campus for fellow students with PC problems, Young told the magazine.
"Friends would say, 'You should talk with my friend Marc. Who's Marc? He's the guy in the red hat'," Young says. "So, at least among his immediate friends, red hats became synonymous with technical expertise."
While Red Hat's red hat originally started out as a clip art top hat, today the red fedora has a great deal of meaning for the company, says Chris Grams, director of brand communications and design at Red Hat.
"The fedora has become a symbolic gift that Red Hat gives to employees and others who have done great honor to or service for the company," Grams says. "We all wear our fedoras with pride."
Thanks to Red Hat's strong brand recognition, it hasn't had problems with customers confusing it with other "Red" companies, such as telecom equipment maker Redback. From time to time, however, it does get mixed up with the Red Hats, a society of older women who go out in groups wearing red hats.
"As a side effect of being called Red Hat, we do occasionally get the opportunity to talk to nice older women about why they should consider using Linux and open-source technology," Grams says.
Is the title misleading? No it was not intentional but accidental that I came across a good study conducted by a company which uses this title while publishing their study. Here is the link to the article
According to me the greatest benefit from Open Source is the learning opportunity it offers and the stimulation it provides for folks like me to innovate in the Open with projects like Samooha

Microsoft Linux!: Microsoft could have and should have done its own version of Linux. It could have bought a Linux distro vendor or just christened some branch of Windows (with some Unix-compatibility add-ons) as Microsoft Linux. By doing this, Microsoft could have thrown a real monkey wrench into Linux companies' plans. Instead, Microsoft continues to spend lots of money, time and attention fighting open-source software on a whole host of fronts. They should have joined the camp, rather than obsessing on beating them.
This is not another debate, please. I am keen to learn from experts as to why there is not as much activity in this space?
We are trying to learn and apply some techniques to encourage Open Source Development (and not just evangelising OSS and using it) in India and other developing countries.
