Recently two news on economic times caught my attention. First one is “IBM has dismissed 700 freshers” and the other “TCS will cut salaries of his employees”. So now the big question is what is happening in software field, is software boom over? The honeymoon for software professionals has ended. I am also worried as I am part of this big community of computer science graduates. Now let’s discuss the pros and cons of both the news.

The Computer Arrives

The first digital computer comes to India estd. 1956, as the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata installs a Hollerith Electronic Computer, HEC-2M, brought from England. Initially, it handled a number of scientific problems from all across the country, including trajectory analysis for artillery cannons for the Defense. It was, in fact, the first computer brought to Asia, outside of Japan.

Rural IT Quiz in Bangalore

The Department of IT, BT and S&T, GoK, in partnership with STPI-Bangalore and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) launched the statewide Rural IT Quiz today. The quiz will be for students from class 8 to 12 (including pre-university students). The finals will be held at Asia’s premier ICT event “bangaloreIT.in 2007”.
In 2006, over 9.55 lakh students took part in the quiz. This year the quiz hopes to cover about 20 lakh students across the State, making it one of the biggest programs of its kind. The quiz, scheduled from October 29, 2007 to November 1, 2007 will conclude at “bangaloreIT.in 2007”.

The quiz is designed to expose more students to the Information Technology industry and encourage all rural schools across the state to step up IT awareness among students. This program will be organized by the offices of Deputy Director for Public Instructions, Education Department at the district level in co-ordination with the Department of IT, BT and S&T.

The research for the entire quiz including the live shows will be conducted by the Quizmaster ‘Pickbrain’ Giri Balasubramaniam. At the joint press conference, M N Vidyashankar, Secretary to Government, Department of IT, BT and S&T, Government of Karnataka and N G Subramaniam, President – TCS Financial Solutions, said that the aim of the event is to create awareness of IT across the State, especially in rural areas.

“The Government has been making concerted efforts to elevate awareness of IT at school levels. The participation last year was highly encouraging and this year we are hoping to exceed the numbers significantly. I am thankful to TCS and other partners for their support in this endeavor,” said Vidyashankar.

"The Rural IT Quiz is an effort to spread the awareness, application and advancements in IT at grass root levels. With the support of Government of Karnataka, we have extended its spread and coverage to all schools in the rural areas of Karnataka. Year on year the popularity of Rural IT Quiz is increasing and we are glad to be part of this initiative. We hope students particularly from the rural areas gain from such public-private partnership initiatives and participate in the Rural IT Quiz in a big way” said N G Subramaniam.

TCS to develop new facility in Hyderabad

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) would expand its operations in Hyderabad by setting up a 15,000-seater development center with an investment of Rs. 400 crore. The numero uno IT company in the country has been granted 75 acres of land in Adibatla village, near the city outskirts.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to this effect was signed between the Andhra Pradesh government and TCS. The space provided to TCS will come under the ambit of Special Economic Zone with state government’s policy of incentives also applicable. TCS plans to carry out operations in hi-tech, engineering and healthcare from the new center in Hyderabad.

MAT - New Tax for Indian Software and Outsourcing Industry in Union Budget 2006 2007

India's export-oriented enterprises such as in the thriving software outsourcing industry were brought back under the tax net in the annual federal budget unveiled on Wednesday. Finance Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram proposed to extend minimum alternate tax (MAT) to firms claiming deductions under sections 10A and 10B of the Income Tax Act.

Now, they must pay the minimum tax, still lower than a full-fledged corporate income tax, practically seeing an end to their tax holiday status conferred years ago.

Grads Train as Software Engineers

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has reportedly started a new initiative named "TCS Ignite" under which Science graduates will be trained as Software Engineers for TCS.

This free-of-cost initiative aims to address the issue of talent shortage by looking beyond Engineering colleges. Reportedly, the move comes amidst concerns among industry players over the shortage of serious talent in the years to come.
