Eternalgandhi.com - Mahatma Gandhi Experiments with multimedia
So, you’ve read Gandhi, seen him on screen and heard him. At Eternal Gandhi Multimedia Exhibition, it’s time to get a feel of history, a day in the Freedom Struggle. So, you can push a button to scroll a day in the Mahatma’s life, hear his favourite bhajans or peer down a kaleidoscope.
The exhibition at Gandhi Smriti was inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
An ochre mosaic timeline runs the length of a wall, fitted with an interactive computer that slides to any point on the tile. ‘‘Move the computer to any point, and it will give you an audio-visual feedback of what Gandhiji was doing at that point in his life,’’ said Ranjit Makkuni, who visualised the project. The museum, at Rs 10 crore, was in the works for three years.
‘‘A lot of the tradition-based interactions here involve tactile interfaces. We’re trying to put the hands back into the communication process,’’ said Makkuni, who heads the Sacred World Research Laboratory, a research and design thinktank that specialises in ‘‘building bridges between traditional and technological cultures’’.
So while you are spinning a colourful wooden charkha, an in-built sensor transmits the words Good, Anmol, National, Desh Premi, Hot head and Imandar on a giant, interactive screen. The acronym (for those of you who have not figured it out) spells GANDHI. The kaleidoscope, on the other hand, is an assemblage of digital images of illustrations of Gandhi sketched by students of Bal Bhavan, Mandi Village, Nangloi Bal Kendra and Surjit Wasu Memorial.
For the musically inclined, there’s the ‘e-Harmonium’ and ‘Gandhi Harp’. Here, pushing a key or pulling a string triggers playback of some of Gandhiji’s favourite bhajans. A ‘Raghupati Xylophone’ plays back the tune of Gandhiji’s favourite hymn, Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram.
There are now plans to develop travelling exhibitions on the same lines. ‘‘Through culturally reflective computing, we’re trying to demonstrate how engagement with one’s culture provokes introspection which drives technological research,’’ said Makkuni.
