Its a cool idea but I think

Its a cool idea but I think it will take some time for it to work in India as its underlying architecture uses wi-fi and your location is found using the wi-fi access point location you are connected to.

I was thinking why can't a similar solution be created using the cell phone tower locations. Cell cos ofcourse know which tower you are in range of and it can be used for virtual GPS instead of Wi-Fi, just an idea :-)

I maybe wrong here.

In Cellphone towers - tower has information that you are within range of that tower - but there is no proper information of exact location inside that tower area where you are standing (hope i am clear).

So,i think cellphone towers cannot be used as virtual GPS.

Sometime back some students from IIT Mumbai made similar application to locate any Cellphone. I dont know what happened to that project.

Wi-Fi is growing in India a very good rate. In cities like Pune and Bangalore, i think there is plenty of it. But as Sachin said, it will take time for Wifi to be properly used in India.

Finding you location based on cell phone cell towers is entirely feasible. This concept has been there for several years now. The problem with this technology is accuracy. A Cellphone tower covers are wide area, measured in kilometers. Even if you detect signals from 4 to 5 towers, you cannot get an exact fix. The WiFi model would certainly be more accurate, since the analyse tens of signals and their strength to determine the location.
