Hi Friends,
What is on my mind is probably on all your minds too. As IT professionals and drawing handsome salaries, we're all exposed to the luxuries of everyday life life a own home, own car , own almost all basic needs; but have we ever paused to see what impact this has had on the common people?????????????
Well we never do as we're so consumed in our own day to day world of IT and lifestyles.
Take the case of my entry into Pune, I took a house on rent in Magarpatta City in May 2005, and then the rate per square feet in Magarpatta was Rs.1250/sq ft for employees of companies within. Can you take a guess on what it is now???? well lemme give you the shock, its an astounding Rs.2300-2400/sq ft.
Have we any mechanism in the country to justify this type of escalation ??? Any checks and balances on what is the cost calculation carried out by these so called reputed builders, and realtors to justify these hikes ???
What is the spiralling effect of this to us, well we'll move on and get another job with a higher salary, but what happens to the masse ??? people who resemble our own parents who have brought us up with such a tight financial situation, people who work on salaries between Rs.10,000 to Rs.15,000.
Well for them a own home turns into a dream, as the rest of the world moves on, they get pushed to the backside, not having the basic satisfaction that they even have a home of their own.
Why all that, recently the Pune edition of times of india claimed that in Pune itself the current trend is that there are no single bedroom home being built anymore..............
We being the fortunate folk, and the so claimed learned and well established folk, need to create a movement that would bring to light atleast the reality behind these increasing real estate prices, and their justifications.
Hope I've struck a few chords with like minded people.
Appreciate your inputs and thoughts if any.
Regards
Neeraj Sripuram.
Neeraj,
Nice post. I echo your sentiment, that IT is not everything. At the end of the day it must help common people improve the quality of their lives.
That, I believe is possible and we will probably see a lot of it in time to come. IT and communication technologies can revolutionize education and healthcare, especially for the poor. Some villages are getting online with mesh networks. Connectedness will help them access high quality educational material, interact with mentors around the world and broaden their perspectives. Teachers from cities can reach out to village schools over online conferencing links and improve the quality of education in remote places. Use of ICT in healthcare is also increasing. In future, doctors may be able to examine as well as operate patients from a remote location.
Their are plenty of opportunities, but the process of evolution is rather slow. Here is where some involvement from governments will help.
