I installed Kubuntu operating system.
I am impressed by its GUI and other Windows like features as well.
I have been advocating open source softwares/applications for long time. I used many applications over last 6 years. But I continued to use Windows operating system.
But my second attempt to embrace Linux failed as soon as I tried to install VMWare on Kubuntu.
VMWare provided GUI based installer for Windows but for linux they have command based installer.
I install/uninstall applications almost daily basis and it was painful for me to use command line installer for that purpose.
I have been patient until I come across non-user friendly error message during installation process. Its added more to my frustration.
Then I thought VMWare may not come up with such installer so lets try other products in market and to my sheer surprise most of products did not have any GUI installers at all.
They have bunch of scripts which you execute in command line (terminal window) and it installs.
In the past we created Installshield installers for every software product we developed. For those who are not from Windows background, InstallShield is commercial product which can be used to package installation files and other installation scripts in easy to follow GUI interface.
There are many such products in the market for Windows installation.
So I was assuming that there may be some product for Linux which allows to create GUI based interactive installation process easily and most of software development community are using it to create easy to use installers.
There might be products available in the market but considering text based installers, I think they are not yet used or unknown to community.
I thought if I am facing so much problem with installing on Linux, non-technical users would never bother to even use it.
If this is the case, this need to be addressed quickly. This is an opportunity to create such installation product.
I might be wrong in my opinions here as I am novice in Linux. So please correct me wherever I miss points.
Some people might say they are happy with text based installation process, but I believe that if Linux wants to replace others in day to day operations, it must address every smallest concerning issue.
End of the day users are king.
