LGPL Samooha-S greets GPL Java
I was wondering how to express my excitement about Sun's recent announcement about Java! After some thoughts I decided to write it in my blog where I discuss about Samooha, the software that is making its own progress as a new generation business application platform for Small and Medium Enterprises.
Sun was long due for making Java available under Open Source and moreover specifically under GPL/LGPL category. It has been my grievance that despite being a great technology and despite being FREE for all the developers out there developing on Java, it was not well accepted by the camp that can be termed as a cult following of GPL. Java Open source projects that were developed on proprietary Java VM were rather alienated in the past by the Linux camp.
It looks like Sun has taken some great lessons from Chanakya and SunTzu to play it right in the competitions' turf. Making Java License as GPL is absolutely a welcome effort to make it popular through the horse's mouth and making it acceptable for the cult followers while still offering the commercial licenses for those who need it that way.
Samooha-S has been placed under LGPL even before Sun could finally make the bold move in the right direction. Since a business application needs significant modifications in some cases as per the local and vertical needs, Samooha-S is available under LGPL for the community to make a balanced choice on how to treat their own derivatives of Samooha-S source.
Following, GPLization of Java, I believe all dependent or extending technologies that are in the Open domain such as Jini and JXTA will follow suit in modifying their License approach to get themselves polished and enhanced through a larger community that could contribute to their growth.
Sun had several admirers for being a great technology company and Sun now has more admirers than ever to help it sell more of its hardware if they really focus on some low end hardware products for SMEs and consumers!! Mr. McNealy, Mr. Schwartz and the team, are you listening?

To keep it short, Samooha is a combination of Entry Level ERP, CRM for small businesses and also has the capability to be a peer-to-peer supply chain system. The goal is big; to cater to all levels of enterprise. The product road map is now to keep it going with basic ERP, CRM, accounting features and demonstrate the possibilities of p2p collaboration amongst small enterprises that can form supply chain clusters. When we reach a critical mass we wish to enhance the collaboration capabilities to match market needs. To summarize, Samooha is primary ERP education for small businesses before they sink millions into the ERP drain after they grow.

I installed samooha from web last month, does it need to be upgraded?
I installed it to get more idea about its philosophy and see features it offers. But I could not gain much knowledge about its ethos. May be some presentations would be useful.
