Barcamp is spreading across India in a space of few months, it is amazing at the speed at which India is taking on the movement of Barcamp, symbolic really of the power of people, it will be interesting to see Barcamp spread beyond technology and hope it brings together people from all walks of life to create amazing events.

I attended the first Barcamp in Delhi on 4th March, really enjoyed, and subsequently we have seen Barcamp events in Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore. This weekend on 13th May, we will see an interesting event happen at the IIT Campus, Mumbai. Mohit Pawar from Hyderabad has done a good job of putting things together in Mumbai, Sponsors have been rushing in, and infact Mohit is having to refuse large sums of sponsor money thrown at, to accomodate more varied sponsors and is only taking small amounts of money from sponsors.

Some of the B Town cities that are fast becoming very popular for BPOs include Chandigarh, Jaipur, Pune, Nashik, Kochi, Vishakapatnam Mysore, Nagpur and Gandhinagar. Collectively they have attracted large brands such as Convergys, Quark, Dell, Infosys, GE, Spectramind, Msource, Transworks, HSBC, Wipro and TCS.

The above cities are all set to take the BPO thunder away from metros. High attrition rate in BPOs situated in metros and increasing cost of real estate is forcing several BPOs to think of Tier II cities as an attractive option. Non-metro cities offer an ample supply of manpower at 25 to 30 per cent cost compared to metro hubs such as Gurgaon-Delhi-Noida, Bangalore, Channai and Mumbai. Apart from that, the cost of real estate and transport is also much cheaper in smaller cities. Besides, it makes sense for the BPOs to spread out to smaller cities to achieve geographical spead for better disaster management.
