Takeaway from the PCQuest Sun Summit

Acism's Java team attended the PCQuest Sun summit last week. I have a few impressions at fifty thousand feet level to share:

  1. Sun is becoming even more open. Matt Thompson, Sr Director who looks after Sun's open source program gave a very balanced view. Sun is also releasing its JVM source code under open source licence.
  2. Childish Microsoft-bashing was absent. Highly mature views were presented about Sun's strategy of living in the world as it is. This will take Java a long way.
  3. Java has been gaining with every significant release. The emphasis given to the latest releases jdk 1.5 and j2ee 1.5, and to the upcoming release jdk 1.6 was apt placed. I could see that the summit was very successful in generating the motivation among developers to lay their hands on these technologies.
  4. There is much excitement with the announcement about getting James Gosling to travel to India for 2007 Sun tech days.
  5. As expected, the discussion on Java out-shadowed that on solaris.
  6. PC Quest made their presence felt through two well-thought-out presentations. The one on Best coding practices was targetted towards junior developers and that on open source project management tools was aimed at the senior mass.

In summary, a lot of things are happening right in the Java space, and reflected appropriately in the summit. Looking forward to attend the Java tech days in 2007, and to see the world switch over to the new Mustang (for the uninitiated, that's the code name of jdk 1.6).
