Open Source India Week

One Week. Multiple Events.

Open Source India Week (OSIW) is essentially a collection of FOSS-related events that will be conducted across India within the 3rd week of February 2008. Here’s an outline of various events planned. Some are in still in pipeline.

The CTOSummit

Inspired by the Open Source Business Conference (OSBC) held annually in the US, this one-day summit will attempt to motivate Indian IT firms to take a more serious look at open source tools, technologies, and business models. Being held at India's Sillicon Valley, the CTOSummit will have a dual agenda:

  • Enable IT firms to reduce costs and improve quality by leveraging open source tools and technologies.
  • Motivate IT firms (and entrepreneurs) to adopt open source practices and business models.

The CXOSummit

A summit where top IT decision makers from the government, enterprise, academia and SME sectors gather to share best practices related to Linux and open source. Most of the talking here is done by the customers, thus creating a platform for the yet-to-try open source prospects to get a realistic picture of challenges and opportunities that open source presents.

  • This year, 'Virtualisation' is going to be an important ingredient in CXOSummit talks.
  • To be held at two cities: Mumbai (13th Feb '08) and New Delhi (15th Feb '08)
  • An exclusive 'by-invitation-only' event

ManageIT Expo

A showcase for innovative products and solutions that can help CXOs, IT managers and software developers in managing IT better.

  • The Expo will be held at two cities: B'lore (11th-12th Feb '08) at IISc and New Delhi (14th-15th Feb '08) at Pragati Maidan.
  • entry to the Expo will be FREE!

FOSS India Awards 2008

The first awards instituted to recognise and reward FOSS projects developed by Indians. The registration for the awards has already begun. Twenty winners will be announced at the awards ceremony, most likely to be held on 12th February '08 at IISc Bangalore.

The TechZone

This is the umbrella event under which all technical talks will be held. This event itself, is, what the entire LinuxAsia used to be about. Highest number of footfalls, maximum number of speakers, the who's who of the FOSS world, the newbies, they all get together here.

The TechZones are being held at Bangalore (11th-12th Feb '08) at the IISc, and at New Delhi (14th-15th Feb '08) at the Pragati Maidan
There will be multiple tracks in the TechZone, which may vary between the two cities

The Keynotes

This is where you get to hear international luminaries like Brian Behlendorf, Klaus Knopper speak. They will share international trends, highlight key technologies and excite and motivate you to contribute and innovate.

  • As part of OSIW's commitment to give back to the community, there is no fees for attending the keynote sessions. But registration is done in advance!
  • Since keynotes form the primary ingredient of the TechZones, they will be held at Bangalore and New Delhi.

Software Development Talks

The goal of this track is: "Update software developers with the latest trends, technologies and best practices in the open source world". Many of our speakers who will deliver keynotes, speak in this track too.

  • Majority of the seats will be released on no cost-basis through a referential email campaign.
  • This track will surely be held at Bangalore. Whether it is to be held at Delhi too, will be confirmed.
  • Speakers and talks are invited. Click here to submit your talk.

IT Implementation Talks

We are witnessing an acceleration in implementation of open source across India. And thus, the goal of this track, which is, "Equip IT implementers with latest open source solutions and best practices" gains paramount significance. Expect the who's who to talk in this track too.

  • Virtualisation will be a key ingredient in these talks.
  • This track will be held both at Bangalore (11th-12th Feb '08) and New Delhi (14th-15th Feb, '08)
  • Majority of the seats will be released on no cost-basis through a referential email campaign.
  • Speakers and talks are invited. Click here to submit your talk.

In the pipe-line...

(Under TechZone)
These tracks/workshops are not confirmed right now. We are trying to get like-minded individuals and organisations together to help us drive these initiatives.

‘Discover FOSS’ Talks
An initiative to attract the 'others' to the world of Linux and open source. Primarily designed to be a community driven initiative, where attempts will be made to demonstrate and educate on the benefits of the FOSS world.

Volunteers, suggestions, feedback and proposals for talks are invited. Click here to submit.

‘FOSS-led Technopreneurship’ Talks
A first-of-its kind initiative that will aim to educate the FOSS community on how they can become entrepreneurs. Issues related to funding, things VCs look for, etc will be discussed here.

Volunteers, suggestions, feedback and proposals for talks are invited. Click here to submit.

‘FOSS-on-mobiles’ Talks
A track targeted primarily at techies who're involved in software development for mobile phones. A first of its kind initiative, and if formalised, will most likely be held at Bangalore.

Suggestions, feedback and proposals for talks are invited. Click here to submit.

‘Linux, Foss & Embedded’ Talks
The goal: to accelerate usage of Linux and open source tools among developers of embedded software. Again, a novel initiative, and if formalised, will most likely be held only at Bangalore.

Suggestions, feedback and proposals for talks are invited. Click here to submit.

‘Virtualisation’ Day
A workshop-format session where benefits of virtualisation will be presented to software developers, IT implementers, and IT decision makers. Additionally, Linux and open source tools will be discussed, along with interoperability solutions.

Suggestions, feedback and proposals for talks are invited. Click here to submit.

Java Day
Java on Linux is gaining popularity. And, there's lots being talked about Open Java. India being a country with thousands of Java developers, we believe, the time has come to conduct a workshop on Java. Again, a first of its kind initiative, and if formalised, will most likely be held at Bangalore only.
