Describing it as a 'real alternative' to Microsoft Office 2007, and an easier upgrade path for existing Microsoft Office users, the OpenOffice.org community has released the next version of OpenOffice i.e. OpenOffice v2.2.
Not only an upgrade to its predecessor in all respects, OpenOffice 2.2 addresses at least two 'critical' vulnerabilities reported by the US Department of Homeland Security late last month.
As per a statement issued by the community, version 2.2 protects users from newly discovered vulnerabilities, wherein users' PCs can be open to attack in the event users open documents from, or access Web sites set up by, malicious individuals.
OpenOffice.org sources vouch for the quality of text display being better in the new version. For instance, what was earlier optional support for kerning, is now enabled by default in v2.2.
Sun Microsystems is the founding and principal sponsor of OpenOffice, while rival open format, Office Open XML, is led by a group that includes software giant, Microsoft.
Office Open XML is strongly pushing for ISO certification. Whereas, OpenOffice has already made news in this respect - what with French members of Parliament choosing Linux over Windows, plus California considering following in the footsteps of Massachusetts that has already adopted Open Document Format (ODF).
