Hi!

I'm a linux freek. I would recommend people to try out different flavours of linux. It's so cool & the philosophy behind creating linux is what binds the entire linux community together. And that is share your knowledge & build on & contribute to the community & help each other grow as what we are trying to do on ITvidya.com.

Some of my personal favorite OS are:
- Suse www.opensuse.org
- Debian www.debian.org
- Mandriva www.mandriva.com
- Knoppix www.knopper.net
- Redhat www.redhat.com
- Ubuntu www.ubuntu.org

Every distribution has there own benefits & objective. Some distro might concentrate on cutting edge technology & research, some might focus on security & some on stability.

Repositories are something that you can find on the net & have collections of software that one can download freely.

Office Application

OpenOffice is doing a fantastic job of providing a free alternative to office. Its freely available for different platforms.
www.openoffice.org.

Internet Browsers.

Firefox & Opera are my favorite.

CRM software...
I would recommend open source software like
SugarCRM www.sugarcrm.com

Instant Messaging.

Gaim would be anytime the best options. It supports almost all IM.

Firefox Vs IE

Truly, I was a strict user of IE befor I met my prof Scott Midkiff from Virginia Tech. I was getting his system configured and then we started discussing abt the diff between the two. He made me realise that Firefox was faster. Since then I started using it. The good features that it incorpoartes was tab windows, storing passwords, new updates, managing bookmarks, etc.

But seeing the market response IE has also bounced back to beat Firefox. IE7 has features of tabbed windows, increased security features etc. Also MS is planning its startegy to get it bundled in the OS itself. Nice move, haaan..

Check out the statistics
http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp

IE 7 has nothing special to offer, apart from Tabbed browsing, RSS feeds ( renamed as 'web feeds') and little bit security enhancement. But still it lack several things like full w3c HTML support. Still long way to go.
