India's export-oriented enterprises such as in the thriving software outsourcing industry were brought back under the tax net in the annual federal budget unveiled on Wednesday. Finance Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram proposed to extend minimum alternate tax (MAT) to firms claiming deductions under sections 10A and 10B of the Income Tax Act.

Now, they must pay the minimum tax, still lower than a full-fledged corporate income tax, practically seeing an end to their tax holiday status conferred years ago.

A US airline has not heard of outsourcing......

Copperman's picture

A few days ago, I took some time off work to make arrangements for a family cruise towards the end of year.
The cruise was book and I made arrangements for the flights from the West coast of the US to the East cost.
My first contact with the booking agent with the Airline was amicable and I thought went very well (aside for the 20 minute wait on the phone to speak to a live booking agent.)

After I received my confirmation, I checked online to see the distance from the airport to the Cruise departure port....it was 350 miles!

Outsourcing - the future lies in solving new problems

Patrick Moore's picture

Indian companies have been successful to date in several areas of the outsourcing market, without having to try particularly hard. The wage differential between Indian staff and staff in the G7 nations has historically been so large that the cost savings were a "no-brainer". However....

....the global situation is changing rapidly, with many other nations entering the low-cost staff battle.

What this means, I believe, is that the successful companies of the future will be those who offer more than just a room full of comparatively inexpensive staff, perhaps much more.

A good example is that of Godrej Global Services, who I had the pleasure of visiting last year. They are developing deep expertise in the area of Sarbanes-Oxley compliance work, which is a very major issue right now for lots of American companies. If they are successful, the likelihood is that they will win a lot of work, because they will actually be far more expert in dealing with the issues than the American companies themselves, who are currently struggling to comprehend and deal with the legislation.

The future is IT

The Times of India

It has been an outstanding year for the Indian IT industry. The financial year clocked the highest growth of the decade (34%) in exports, which totalled US $17.2 billion. The closing days of the year brought fresh cheer. The NASSCOM McKinsey Report 2005 revealed that if the present looks good, the future seems even brighter. It sees the Indian IT industry becoming as important as Japan's automobile industry, French fashion or Saudi petroleum. At present, India's share in the global software industry is about 3%. We dominate the offshoring market, with 65% and 46% share in global IT and BPO respectively. The report estimates the global offshoring market is almost ten times the present size. Keeping this in mind, and looking at other aspects of demand and supply, the report concludes that the Indian IT industry can generate export revenues of $60 billion in 2010.

A GREAT year for Indian IT

mirowais's picture

Resurgent software exports, lucrative global deals, huge investments, acquisition, a quite burial to the outsourcing outcry and low-cost computers marked the year 2005 for the information technology industry, which also had its share of blots that threatened to mar the booming business process outsourcing story.

The Indian software and services export is estimated at Rs 78,230 crore ($17.2 billion) in 2004-05, as compared to Rs 58,240 crore ($12.8 billion) in 2003-04, an increase of 34 per cent.

This segment will continue to show robust growth in future also. IT exports are likely to grow by 30-32 per cent in dollar terms during 2005-06.

Indian IT cos take UK by storm

mirowais's picture

India's burgeoning outsourcing industry has reached British shores - literally. Indian IT companies are either setting up call centre operations in Britain or taking over existing call centres.

"The empire strikes back... It is the ultimate Indian take-away," remarked Phiroz Vandrevala of Mumbai-based TCS Consulting, after announcing the company's takeover of the Peterborough-based Pearl Group last Friday.
