Farmers use Google Earth to get right compensation

vinayras's picture

Some 140 kilometers from Mumbai, farmers are turning to technology to fight for their rights. Four months ago, Pen Taluka's farmers were told that the State government was acquiring their land to help build the 25,000 acre Maha Mumbai SEZ. That's when Arun Shivkar, an activist of the SEZ Hatao Virodh Samiti logged onto to Google Earth.

"We used Google technology to prove to the authorities that the land is fertile," says Shivkar. He says initially state authorities claimed that only a small portion of the earmarked land is fertile and that some parts of it is submerged by salty creek water. That means lower compensation for the farmers.

1 Reclaim the term ‘hacker’. If you tinker with electronics, you are a hacker. If you use things in more ways than intended by the manufacturer, you are a hacker. If you build things out of strange, unexpected parts, you are a hacker. Reclaim the term.

2 Violating a license agreement is not theft.

3 All corporations are not on your side.

How can technology be used to end extreme poverty?

    Patrick Moore's picture

It seems to me that some of the technological developments of the last 30 to 50 years can play a major part in ending extreme poverty, wherever it occurs in the world. CK Prahalad wrote about some of these developments in his excellent book "The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid", but there are many others besides.

    A few examples include:

    * The $100 laptop, proposed by Nicholas Negroponte, which should offer a much broader range of people the opportunity to access the incredible information resources of the web.

    * Peer-to-peer mobile phone networks, which offer the prospect of much more widespread connectivity in sparsely populated areas, including many parts of Africa.

Thank you, CRN, not all is lost when it comes to Press/Media reporting!

    rajesh's picture

    http://www.crn-india.com/breakingnews/stories/62831.html

Even while I am complaining of my distorted view about the Indian media I am surprised to see this news release made by the company I represent, through an open release which is again our policy of "take it or leave it" for the press, being picked up by CRN India!

Seems like not everything is lost in reporting something good without being paid for or getting the story by throwing a cocktail dinner. When there are not better breaking news, the unbreaking news becomes breaking!! Many thanks to CRN and Jasubhai Media for having taken and reproduced it (never mind even if its after a month after the release). I stumbled on it through a web search.

Great ebook for creating web-based businesses

    anand's picture

The folks at 37signals.com have released a book that encompasses their business philosophy that is very innovative and agile. The book is called Getting Real and is available at http://gettingreal.37signals.com It is a fairly quick read and is easy-to-read even for the non-technical readers.

This current month's issue of BusinessWeek also has a feature on 37signals and their approach to go from concept to released product in 3 and a half-months or less. I am a big advocate of their philosophy because it can be a great mantra for Indian IT start-ups. The book professes a low-cost and lean approach to starting up that enables you to move quickly and engage customers early. Other key points in the book include the technique of being customer-centric in your product design and starting at the market-end, not at the engineering-end. They also list pitfalls that web-application-developing entrepreneurs commonly run into, and suggest how those can be avoided.

Ajanta, Amul and Samooha - Part 1

    rajesh's picture

I wanted to write this for long but there is no better time than now to sit down to express this.

This would be first in a two part blog entries related to this topic very close to my heart.

In early 90s I served in Ajanta Clocks in the remote town of Morbi near Rajkot. It was one of the best experiences of my experiments with life. I had two offers at a time while taking up the position at Ajanta. I chose Ajanta to manage their Tool Room than being a Junior Technical Officer at VIP Industries at Nasik in a hierarchical structure.

Ajanta was a family run business and there were 8 brothers or cousins from 3 families managing the show. The most influential, then, amongst them was Shri. Pravin Bhai Bhalodia. He could be termed the Managing Director and was actually called back from his second year in BE as the founder Shri. Odhavji Bhai R Patel and the family needed many working hands to run the operations. Shri Odhavji Bhai himself was a teacher cum entrepreneur who made those age old mechanical clocks which I remember to be winding until the coil spring broke!
