Linux groups merging, finally!!

Finally, two Linux groups merging to offer a better unified face to real competition!

I remembered Scott McNealy's words during Sun Developer Conference back in 2002 in Bangalore. His words were "Do not develop for any OS, not even for Solaris, develop on Java so that your investment is safe on any OS" Only visionaries dare to say this at the cost of their own business interest (Solaris).

The P2P connection with Taiwan quake disruption

Not sure if this gets posted as I am on a very weak connection restored today after being unable to access ITVidya for a couple of days after the internet connection in Singapore got disrupted due to under sea cable damage in Taiwan Quake.

Yes, for a moment it looked like we have gone back to medieval age! The quake might have spared the massive damage to human lives this time on boxing day. But it has definitely exposed the vulnerability of central systems in a increasingly distributed and globalized era of connectivity.

Java SE 6 performance

In our Samooha project we were looking at improving performance of boot-up time for our heavy Swing application :-)

Guess what, we just moved to Java 6 to see if things are different and we got a bonus of 20 percent additional speed to our application boot-up time!!

Looks like Java 6 has done a good job until at least we are hit with any other blocks in the near future.

Equating ERP education with School education

The (universal) problem:
It is always amazing to see the enterprises of today, jumping into an ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system without really analyzing their own understanding about an ERP or even worse what their business needs are. Most of the times SMEs tend to be over-confident and expect that their ERP should do everything for them.

The reality:

LGPL Samooha-S greets GPL Java

I was wondering how to express my excitement about Sun's recent announcement about Java! After some thoughts I decided to write it in my blog where I discuss about Samooha, the software that is making its own progress as a new generation business application platform for Small and Medium Enterprises.

Samooha's nearest European Cousin??

Our efforts to find facts seem to be paying off! Recently, I personally came across a very interesting Technical Paper written by Researchers at a Technical University in Germany. Unfortunately, it is just a paper and I was not able to find anything in concrete form that can be evaluated as an offering.

This finding makes it a good reference to discuss during the Seminar on 19th May

The fact finding mission will go on till 15th May

On a fact finding mission

It's official now and something strange too!

The cooperative had no choice but to assure itself that it was not making a false claim. It was now ready for letting go some stake for someone who is so seriously active and informed of global IT markets.

The Press Release and the announcement on the website would give the visitors an opportunity to involve and find the facts whatsover.

What a way to spend the long weekend with a fact finding mission for the sake of Vishwa Samooha?

Spaghetti Noodles over Bisi Bele Baath?!

I live with a vivid memory of that day when I visited the JXTA.org on April 25 2001 when it was launched with much fanfare as an Open Source project which was an outcome of $10 Mn acquisition of Gene Kan's Infrasearch by Sun. If Bill Joy liked something I am sure there were many who would like it, then! JXTA was one such thing.

While trying to build something over Jini along with my first IT Guru Tarun Bhargava, JXTA seemed very exciting and promising when we thought of the possibilities in a socially, geographically, economically and politically realigning world.

Redhat restarts JBoss for $350 Mn

Way back in 2001 end, when I interacted with Marc Fleury, the dynamic Founder of JBoss, I was having a fair idea about the destiny of JBoss.

A seven plus years journey for JBoss has not been a smooth ride in the early days of skepticism surrounding Java Open Source and J2EE certification issues.

Finally after much speculation about Oracle's possible new item in its long shopping list, JBoss made RedHat its new container!

Here is how JBoss would look like now on http://www.redhat.com/about/news/prarchive/2006/jboss.html

SMEs, better late than never. IT Pros, better now than later.

It's my earnest request to all the Indian IT professionals to share this information with local businesses and if possible also spare some time to educate the emerging businesses to manage their operations through a minimal process based ERP.

Refer this link for an interesting debate where I have posted my comments too. IT for the unwashed masses

While Zudha, the company I represent, is busy positioning Samooha as a whole new way of implementing ERP, CRM, SCM integrated in one platform for all levels of the enterpise pyramid in the advanced markets I would be equally aspiring that Indian small and medium businesses although very slow in adopting ERP systems can make the best use of this new offering Samooha-S available as FREE download to position themselves to be visible in the global markets with their product/service offerings.

Thank you, CRN, not all is lost when it comes to Press/Media reporting!

http://www.crn-india.com/breakingnews/stories/62831.html

Even while I am complaining of my distorted view about the Indian media I am surprised to see this news release made by the company I represent, through an open release which is again our policy of "take it or leave it" for the press, being picked up by CRN India!

Seems like not everything is lost in reporting something good without being paid for or getting the story by throwing a cocktail dinner. When there are not better breaking news, the unbreaking news becomes breaking!! Many thanks to CRN and Jasubhai Media for having taken and reproduced it (never mind even if its after a month after the release). I stumbled on it through a web search.

Dr.Kurien, you deserved the Bharat Ratna but..

When we think we are indispensable and hold on to the seat we are ejected by force. I have utmost respect for Dr.Kurien of the Amul Cooperative movement as I am aware of the obstacles he has faced to make it work.

But little did I know a few weeks ago when I wrote this entry Amul, Ajanta and Samooha - 2 that Dr.Kurien would end up this way with the use of force by dissidents. With over 33 years of dedication Dr.Kurien might have had his own reasoning to hold on to the seat which he might have never properly sat on during the early days of establishing the cooperative.

Developer Story of 2006-07

This is a story that will make rounds in the internet during 2006-07 and beyond. This is a story that belongs to the common people who can do uncommon things provided they commit themselves and work with extreme passion if there is optimal scope for them to think with their right brain and influence their left brain to realize the thoughts. Little more about the Brain at http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/13.02/brain.html

This is a story that will encourage many more ordinary people in India and all over the world to pursue their extraordinary or unconventional ideas for the sake of larger human needs.

2006-07 Samooha predictions for Indian SME

This is neither a routine forecast nor an IT prediction by Gardener, McKingsLie and associates!

However, these are some serious projections by Samooha managers to enable Indian Enterprise transformation to match and eventually exceed global standards so that India could reach out to the world and collaborate for collective growth.

Here go the projections:

1 million businesses and service institutions ranging from educational, health care to NGOs will install, evaluate and adopt the FREE version of Samooha (Samooha-S) for their basic ERP, inventory and accounting needs. They will do so either by downloading the FREE software or by procuring a CD for Rs. 500 from their nearest computer store.

Samooha Open Source - Todo or strike off?

In the changing world of business equations and dynamics we took an internal vote to go in favor of making Open Source, Samooha, the platform we put together for all size businesses to adopt in the present and future circumstances of changing connected world.

We had 80% vote in favor to Open Source but the 20% stopped us from moving forward. A caution we are currently taking are in the interest of all the stake holders. Here are a few links which one can take a look which speaks for and against.
