Method to trim computer's spam diet


A study by a group of computer scientists has found that a method used by spammers can be put into use to block the most common kind of spam.

Most spam messages originate in networks of compromised computers, called botnets, and owners are unaware that the machines quietly run malicious software in the background that pump out spam, reports New Scientist.

But researchers have now come up with a system that deciphers the templates a botnet is using to create spam, and these templates are then used to teach spam filters what to look for.

Google's reCAPTCHA Buy to Aid Book Search

The company is called reCAPTCHA, a startup spun off from a research effort Carnegie Mellon University's computer science department.The technology is similar to the classic CAPTCHA (define) model, the widely used challenge-response system that tests to make sure a user is a human, rather than a malicious program looking to spread co-opt computers to spread spam or commit some other illicit activity.

The plan of pay-per-email, they say, will help reduce unwanted spams and the money thus generated will go to charity.Spam is more abundant than ever, making up more than 90% of all email sent globally. Most is intercepted by anti-spam programs that filter mail by its origin or content.
