FOSS in Science [www.space-kerala.org/fsc] is a national workshop
being organised by the Union Christian
College[http://www.uccollege.edu.in/], Aluva, Kerala State, in
collaboration with the Society for Promotion of Alternative Computing

Foundation of India (FSFI)[www.gnu.org.in].

The "read-write" culture of open source will generate greater economic prosperity than the proprietary culture that has dominated the computer industry, free software icon Lawrence Lessig said Tuesday at LinuxWorld.
In an opening keynote speech at the event, Lessig — a Stanford law professor and founder of Creative Commons — said Linux and open-source software are critical to the formation of a "read-write" Internet that's free of the control of proprietary application, content and network infrastructure vendors, embodied by Microsoft, Sony and Disney, and AT&T and Comcast.

Wikipedia defines FOSS -Free and Open Source Software, as a “software which is liberally licensed to grant the right of users to study, change, and improve its design through the availability of its source code”.
FOSS can be used in setting up the ICT infrastructure in educational institutions like the server software and desktop applications, Library Management Systems and Learning Management Systems etc. In short it can provide softwares to host a ELearning Institution.The potential cost savings resulting from the use of FOSS is immense”…
