Open Source Solutions Should Cost More

Talk to any art dealer and you'll hear the same thing: Sometimes the only way to shift a work that's proving hard to sell is to jack the price up a bit. That dodgy painting of a sunset over Hong Kong's Victoria Harbor or the tearful little girl standing by a horse may not sell for $50, but mark it up to $500, and it will be gone in a jiffy. Why? Because a higher price sometimes convinces the buyer that he or she is buying a true work of art and not a naff and worthless piece of junk.

While you certainly do not need to purchase support services, there may be benefits beyond the obvious ones. Many popular open source software projects turn into businesses.

The first release candidate for openSUSE 11.2 was released this week and includes the latest Linux 2.6.31.3 kernel, social networking support and the inclusion of the GNOME 2.28 desktop, among other new features. While both the latest GNOME and KDE desktops are part of the openSUSE 11.2 release, the KDE desktop will now become the default choice for desktop GUI instead of GNOME.
