How long will an ERP project take?

I was thinking since quite sometime as a College sudent that Project Management is not an unmanageable function. But when time came to face it in reality, I would say that this was a most challenging task since it involves 3 main elements a person could manipulate / extrapulate with success, which People. Process & Technology.

I invite you to share your pleasant & unpleasant experiences here by which multiple communities like Managers, Business leaders, SW developers etc may gain to benefit.

Almost all the IT companies are struggling with attrition monster, and the worst hit are the product based financial companies where the major chunk of work is maintenance of legacy systems (yak@#$).

Recruitment, training and when organizations are ready to reap benefit from the trained resources...zap!!!! They vanish.

Looking at the alarming rate of attrition - the actual rate is much higher than the figures what management comes up with, remember to be a part of manager's inner circle you need to master the art of blunting the sharp edges.

According to Martin Fowler (Editor IEEE Journals), Modeling methods in past were not very formal affaires. Definitions were left to intuition, and there were many gaps. People with a formal methods background criticized these methods for software projects. They argued that the lack of rigor meant to too much ambiguity. But the reality is that many people found that despite this lack of formality, the informal methods were generally more useful and fast resulting than the formal methods. In practice it seems that informality is an advantage.

By definition, I take a process as the decision or a set of decisions, one wishes to get early in a project. Here, the question comes why do the people feel the need to get something right early in the project. The answer obvious is because they perceive those things hard to change in later phases of the project. I could not find any theoretical reason of anything in software being hard to change. Any aspect of any software may be picked up to make easy to change. Here a common practical problem arises. Efforts to make anything easy to change make the overall complex software a little more complex. This way, making everything easy to change in the software makes it uncontrollably complex. In fact, this is the complexity of the software systems that makes it hard to change. And its hardness to change gives a need of right decisions in early phases of the project.

What is Organization Project Management (OPM)?
OPM is the systematic management of projects, programs, and portfolios in alignment with the achievement of strategic goals. The concept of OPM is based on the idea that there is a co-relation between an organization’s capabilities in project management. Program management and portfolio management, and it effectiveness in implementing strategy. The degree to which an organization practice this type of project management is referred to as it OPM maturity.

IN THE RUSH TO IMPLEMENT PROJECT MANAGEMENT, some organizations are implementing large-scale training programs, hiring project management consultants, and setting up project offices. Still, they are not seeing the results they had expected. The reason is simple-they have not created the environment necessary for project management to grow and flourish. What is a project environment and how can you create one? It's not easy, but it can be done.

Quality is important in virtually all areas of a project. Proven tools and techniques for planning and implementing quality processes in a project environment are being used in projects of almost all domains in industry & government organizations.

PMI, USA have published world wide recognized standard 'Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK)' which is updated every 4-years. PMI have very recently announced another standard; 'Organizations Project Management Maturity Model (OPM3)' to enable organizations to measure their maturity in managing projects and propagating concept of Projectizing activities of all the functions.
