Search Engines listed top source of business information by SMBs

AllBusiness.com, Inc., a leading online resource for businesses, has announced the results of its 2007 year-end “SMB State of the Union Study” and SMB Barometer. The study found 74 percent of small and mid-size business (SMB) leaders list search engines as their top source for business information to help them run their company.

The study also found 63 percent of SMB leaders will be turning to search engines even more going into the New Year. While “word of mouth” is still a solid source of information at 71 percent, this marks the first time in the “SMB State of the Union” study history that search was cited as the top source.

Overall business sentiment among SMBs is positive

For the third straight year-end forecast, SMBs are generally optimistic about their business outlook for the coming year and say the falling value of the dollar is their most important economic concern. Other findings focused on SMB outlook included:

  • 55 percent of small business leaders planned to hold a holiday party while
  • 38 percent of small businesses did not. One recent survey of bigger businesses indicated that 85 percent of companies hosted a holiday party this year.

  • 30 percent of small business leaders were planning on giving year-end bonuses and 33 percent were not.
  • 60 percent of small business leaders are concerned about the falling value of the dollar while 23 percent are primarily concerned about immigration.
  • 78 Percent of small businesses took green measures this past year; recycling paper and trash were the most common measure.
Overall, 73 percent of small business leaders are optimistic going into 2008 dipping slightly from 75 percent in 2006 and 79 percent in 2005.
“We have been tracking the search habits of SMB decision makers since the launch of our Web site, and we’re excited to report that search is now their dominant source of business information. This indicates how deeply seated the Internet is as a primary business tool. Search is where they start the research process and increasingly, search is where they find the best answers,” says Kathy Yates, CEO of AllBusiness.com.

“Given so many pessimistic forecasts about interest rates, the housing sector, oil prices and a potential recession, we’re also gratified to see a dose of optimism within the SMB community heading into 2008,” Yates added.

SMB Barometer stays steady and growth oriented

Launched near the end of 2005, AllBusiness.com’s SMB Barometer provides a numerical figure that measures overall SMB health by reflecting the combined values of five components, including staffing plans, business real estate trends, business branch plans, technology investment and overall business outlook. The barometer reading is currently at 63, the same that was reported fourth Quarter last year signaling continued optimism.

Site Maps - Search Engine Spider Food

targetseo's picture

Text links have a lot of value for optimal spidering, and site map has importance to help search engine robots reach website’s deeper pages.

Search engine robots cannot click a button, submit a form, pull down a menu, or perform any other type of online ‘user interaction’ that might be used by a human visitor. They are able to index the text on a page and click through hypertext links. A navigational text link is added to web pages (often located at the bottom of the page) to enable the search engine robots with another means to click through the links of web pages when it cannot access these other types of navigation.

2) Top 10 website are not much related to keywords.
3) More money keywords website will be appeared on ads (on left hand side of search engine)

4)Main intention is to acquiring the more clicks on ads.

5)Money Keyword such as " Buy, Order, Purchase" will appear less in natural listing (top 10).

6) Crawling and Updating time has been increased (Approx 90 days)

One year back Google did the same but Google also valued those websites which were coming through organic results along with adword results.

Google, Yahoo and Microsoft partner to help webmasters.

mirowais's picture

Strange bedfellows Google Inc., Microsoft Corp. and Yahoo Inc. have partnered to simplify how webmasters and online publishers submit their sites' content for indexing in the companies' search engines.

In a rare collaborative effort, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo, which compete directly in Internet search and other online services, plan to announce on Thursday their support for the open-source Sitemap Protocol, based on XML.

This protocol, which Google created and has been using for about 18 months, will be adopted by Yahoo effective Thursday, and the three companies will collaborate to extend and enhance it. Yahoo has been using another protocol, which it will continue to support. Microsoft will stop using its current protocol after it implements Sitemap Protocol in its search engine in early 2007.

A site map is a file that webmasters and publishers put on their sites to guide the search engines' automated Web crawlers in properly indexing their Web pages.

Site maps are particularly useful in highlighting to crawlers the dynamic Web content that is served up on the fly. Crawlers generally index content contained in static Web pages without problems, but often they have difficulty with dynamic content, such as the one that is generated as a result of a search query.

A site map can be formatted using various protocols, but this means more work for webmasters and publishers, which is why Google, Microsoft and Yahoo are throwing their weight behind the Sitemap Protocol to promote it as a standard.

"The benefit for publishers is that they'll get more of their content indexed more rapidly," said Tim Mayer, Yahoo's senior director of global search.

Meanwhile, the three companies believe the common protocol will improve site maps in general and along the way make their search engine crawlers more comprehensive in their indexing, a benefit that will trickle down to end users.

"Ultimately, what we care about is the best results for searchers and making things easy for site owners. This really does that," said Vanessa Fox, product manager for Google's Webmaster Central.

In addition to listing Web pages available for indexing, the Sitemap Protocol also lets publishers and webmasters include other relevant information, like when a page was last updated, how frequently it changes and what its importance level is on the site. All of this leads to more precise and effective crawling, the officials said.

Google, Microsoft and Yahoo will encourage other search engine operators, as well as makers of related software, like content management systems vendors, to support the protocol, they said.
